The Ontario government is improving people’s access to diagnostic imaging services and reducing wait times by investing over $20 million in operating funding to support the addition of 27 new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines in hospitals across Ontario.
Goderich, ON — Monday, December 19, 2022 — Today, MPP Lisa Thompson visited the Alexandra Marine & General Hospital (AMGH) to announce funding from the government for the installation of an Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit.
“This investment from the government will improve access for all residents of Huron County and patients can be diagnosed quicker without needing to travel long distances to receive this diagnostic imaging,” said Jimmy Trieu, President and CEO.
MRI broadens the range of services available to AMGH’s patients, draws patients to work with in‐house specialists, and helps AMGH continue to be a leading provider of health care services within the region.
“AMGH is thrilled and appreciative to Minister Thompson, Minister Jones and the Provincial Government, that an MRI machine has been awarded to Goderich. This will enable Huron County residents the use of this technology closer to home,” said Glen McNeil.
Bruce Shaw stated, “The South Huron Hospital Association Board is appreciative of the Ministry's decision to locate a new MRI in our broader community. Wait times will be reduced considerably, and service will be within easy reach. This is not a quick fix, but it does establish a long-term plan for improving health care in Huron County.”
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging?
MRI is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to take detailed pictures of organs and tissues in the body. MRIs are used to diagnose many health problems, including brain injuries, heart disease and various tumours and cancers.
This funding brings the total investment in operational funding for new MRI machines to $40 million, increasing the government’s 2021-22 commitment to invest $30 million by an additional $10 million to help hospitals increase MRI capacity and services. In total, the province is providing operational funding for 49 new MRI machines in 42 hospitals across the province.
